Islamic Emirate Invited to Attend COP31 Climate Summit as Observer

This marks the second time since the Islamic Emirate returned to power in 2021 that its representatives will attend a United Nations climate summit.

The Associated Press has reported that Islamic Emirate officials have been invited to attend next week’s United Nations climate summit in Türkiyeas observers.

According to the report, Rohullah Amin, Head of Climate Change at Afghanistan’s Environmental Protection Agency, confirmed that Kabul plans to attend the COP31 summit in Antalya.

Shoaib Sadat, Environmental Expert, said: “This provides a good opportunity for cooperation, allowing climate finance donors and international partners to provide technical and financial assistance to Afghanistan, particularly vulnerable communities that need such support.”

This marks the second time since the Islamic Emirate returned to power in 2021 that its representatives will attend a United Nations climate summit.

Observers can attend meetings and discussions but do not have a role in formal negotiations on climate policies and targets.

Sayed Mohammad Sulaimankhil, Environmental Expert, said: “It is unfair that Afghanistan is among the countries most affected by climate change, yet it is not formally invited due to political considerations. Still, we welcome the invitation as observers. At least it gives us an opportunity to raise the challenges we face.”

Meanwhile, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) previously reported that Afghanistan is among the countries most vulnerable to climate change, facing drought, water shortages, extreme heat, and unpredictable flooding.
