According to a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry, Lavrov identified the ISIS-K as the primary security threat to Central Asia.

Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has described terrorism as one of the most serious threats to global peace and stability during a regional counterterrorism meeting.

According to a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry, Lavrov identified the ISIS-K as the primary security threat to Central Asia, saying the group is seeking to use Afghanistan as a base to expand its activities and establish a caliphate.

Quoting Lavrov, the ministry said: “Terrorism remains one the most daunting challenges to international peace and stability. For the Central Asian region, the main threat is undoubtedly posed by the Islamic State offshoot Wilayat Khorasan, which seeks to use Afghanistan as a launching pad for expansion and subsequent establishment of a caliphate.”

Sarwar Niazi, a military affairs analyst, said: “Today, we see that ISIS has not claimed control over any part of Afghanistan’s territory. Therefore, the current government’s fight against terrorism is commendable and should be supported.”

Responding to Lavrov’s remarks, the spokesperson for the Islamic Emirate said ISIS has been completely suppressed in Afghanistan and no longer has any physical presence in the country.

Speaking to TOLOnews, Zabihullah Mujahid said the Islamic Emirate’s forces maintain full control over all of Afghanistan and that neighboring countries and the wider region should have no concerns in this regard.

Mujahid added: “ISIS members have been completely crushed in Afghanistan and have no physical presence here. The security forces have full control over Afghanistan’s territory.”

Abdul Mateen Qani, spokesperson for the Ministry of Interior, said: “We have fulfilled our responsibility at the regional level. There is no armed or subversive group that poses a threat to Afghanistan’s internal security or cross-border security.”

Earlier, the Ministry of Defense of the Islamic Emirate announced that, as part of its campaign against ISIS-K, it had carried out airstrikes last month on the group’s bases in parts of Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, inflicting casualties and financial losses on the group.
