The Islamic Emirate has not yet commented on Baghaei’s remarks or the upcoming meeting.
Speaking at his weekly press conference, Baghaei said Iran continues to use regional platforms, including the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and the Moscow Format, to hold consultations on Afghanistan.
Esmail Baghaei, spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, said: “The Moscow Format meeting was held again in October, and consultations took place on its sidelines to ensure that this process continues with strength. Therefore, regional developments have not caused us to overlook the importance of processes related to Afghanistan and the regional security issues associated with it.”
According to Baghaei, preparations are underway for another quadrilateral meeting on Afghanistan in the coming months. As part of these efforts, an Iranian director-general has traveled to Türkiye and Pakistan.
He emphasized that Tehran is closely following political and security developments related to Afghanistan.
Gul Mohammaduddin Mohammadi, a political analyst, said: “If the upcoming meeting in Iran focuses on inviting other countries to cooperate with Afghanistan and on recognizing Afghanistan, and if Iran itself finds the courage to recognize Afghanistan despite US opposition, it would be an achievement for both Iran and Afghanistan.”
Himayatullah, another political analyst, said: “We can expand our engagement with Iran by focusing on our national interests. Bilateral relations based on national interests and shared priorities will be very important for Afghanistan.”
The Islamic Emirate has not yet commented on Baghaei’s remarks or the upcoming meeting.
Previously, Iran hosted a meeting of the Regional Contact Group on Afghanistan in the month of Qaws (November–December) last year, attended by representatives from more than 11 countries.
However, the Islamic Emirate declined to participate in the meeting, stressing that Afghanistan should not be treated as a problem.
