So far, no country has recognized the Islamic Emirate for the purpose of taking Afghanistan’s seat at the United Nations.
Abdul Salam Hanafi, Administrative Deputy Prime Minister, told TOLOnews that with security ensured and poppy cultivation and drug trafficking brought to an end in Afghanistan, the Islamic Emirate has the right to have its representative at the United Nations.
Referring to Afghanistan’s security and political situation, Hanafi said the country has an established government and that Afghan territory is not being used to threaten the security of other countries.
Abdul Salam Hanafi said: “There is a functioning government in Afghanistan, security has been ensured, and narcotics have been eliminated. Afghan territory is not being used against the security of others. Therefore, it is the undeniable right of the Afghan people to have a representative at the United Nations. This is our right.”
Maiwand Jurrat, a political analyst, said: “Countries, led by the United States, that have influence at the United Nations have exerted pressure, and as a result, the UN seat has not yet been handed over to a representative of the Islamic Emirate.”
In another part of his remarks, the Administrative Deputy Prime Minister rejected reports about restrictions on women’s employment in Afghanistan.
He said women are working in the healthcare and education sectors, as well as in a number of government institutions, while observing Islamic hijab.
Hanafi added: “There is propaganda outside the country claiming that women do not work here. You know that in our hospitals and clinics, thousands of our sisters work as doctors and nurses. In the education sector, thousands of female teachers are engaged in teaching, and women are also working in passport offices, national ID departments, the police and various other departments while observing Islamic hijab.”
Tafsir Siyahposh, a women’s rights activist, said: “We cannot under any circumstances ignore half of society. For more than four years, our future has remained uncertain, and we have been living in uncertainty. We Afghan women call on the Islamic Emirate to pay attention to this issue.”
Earlier, Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, said that decisions regarding the recognition of governments and Afghanistan’s seat at the United Nations fall within the authority of UN member states, not the organization itself.
He added that, so far, no country has recognized the Islamic Emirate for the purpose of taking Afghanistan’s seat at the United Nations, and there is no process underway among member states in this regard.
