Pakistan said 724 trucks carrying humanitarian assistance have crossed into Afghanistan through the Torkham border crossing, delivering aid to families in need amid the country’s continuing humanitarian crisis.
Pakistan Today reported that Muhammad Yahya, the UN humanitarian coordinator and resident representative in Pakistan, said the trucks transported relief supplies through Torkham. He thanked the Pakistani government and others involved in keeping the humanitarian route open.
Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar also welcomed the movement of aid, saying Islamabad supports humanitarian efforts to deliver assistance to vulnerable families in Afghanistan.
The aid shipments come as trade and movement across the Afghanistan-Pakistan border have faced repeated disruptions in recent months because of security tensions and disagreements between the two countries. Humanitarian agencies have continued seeking ways to maintain access for essential supplies despite the restrictions.
Last month, 21 of 26 trucks carrying World Food Programme assistance also entered Afghanistan through Torkham, according to the report.
The continued flow of humanitarian supplies is significant as Afghanistan faces widespread poverty, food insecurity and growing humanitarian needs. UN agencies and aid organizations have warned that funding shortages and access constraints could further affect vulnerable communities.
The border situation is also linked to wider tensions between Kabul and Islamabad. Pakistan has repeatedly accused the Taliban authorities of allowing Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants to operate from Afghanistan territory, allegations the Taliban authorities reject. Kabul has maintained that insecurity in Pakistan is an internal matter.
Despite these political and security tensions, the movement of humanitarian convoys through Torkham provides an important channel for delivering food and other essential assistance to vulnerable Afghans.
