US Continues Diplomatic Push to Free Detained Citizens in Afghanistan

Experts believe such remarks may signal a renewed American focus on more serious policymaking regarding Afghanistan and the broader region.

The US State Department said efforts are ongoing to secure the release of American citizens detained in Afghanistan, Russia, and Venezuela.

Tammy Bruce, spokesperson for the department, made these remarks in response to a question regarding the release of 47 American prisoners during the first 100 days of Donald Trump’s second term in office.

She stated: “He has a tweet out that refers to 47 unjustly detained Americans, and so that’s what I’ll speak to here. And that is, of course, a correct number. It will be higher, I believe, soon, including in Afghanistan, Russia, and Venezuela through diplomatic efforts. These are huge wins for the United States and it is because of President Trump’s leadership.”

Meanwhile, the US President and Secretary of State once again criticized the manner in which American forces were withdrawn from Afghanistan, saying the move encouraged the Russian president to invade Ukraine.

Donald Trump said: “And I said, you can’t give up Bagram, we gave up Bagram, and right now China occupies Bagram. So sad, so crazy. One of the biggest airbases in the world, among the strongest and longest runways anywhere in the world. One hour away from where China makes its nuclear missiles.”

Experts believe such remarks may signal a renewed American focus on more serious policymaking regarding Afghanistan and the broader region.

Salim Paigir, a political analyst, said: “The fact that the National Security Advisor was dismissed is a sign of the US adopting a softer approach, because they now intend to pursue a gentler strategy toward Afghanistan and other countries in the world. Warmongering individuals will face a fate similar to that of Mike Waltz.”

So far, the Islamic Emirate has not reacted to Trump’s latest remarks; however, earlier, a spokesperson for the Islamic Emirate dismissed claims about China’s presence at the Bagram airbase as baseless.
